Church at Perissa Beach
Leaving the wet weather behind in Berlin, we flew to the volcanic island of Santorini in the Cylades, Greece. The caldera that makes for the spectacular view was formed by a major eruption 3,600 years ago. We stayed in Firostefani, 15 minutes walk north of the main town Fira. A good choice as Fira gets considerably busy because of the cruise ships arriving in the caldera at night and releasing hundreds of tourists into Fira (by donkey or cable car up the cliff) in the morning.
Our three days were spent wandering around, relaxing and eating (see later post). The weather was sunny, the sunsets beautiful and the food fresh. A little cold to swim in the clear waters yet.

The path to Oia
Day two saw us hike from Firostefani to Oia, 2.5 hours north. We managed with the average directions that took us, more or less, along the ridge of the island, through Oia and finally down a couple of hundred steps to a small fishing ‘village’ in Ammoudi Bay for a fresh seafood dinner. The walk itself followed a path that traversed black, white and red volcanic rocks and was filled with wildflowers as well as magnificent views of the towns and caldera.

Happy Mothers’ Day, mums! xxxx
Stay tuned for our Greek food post, and the 100s of photos from Santorini!!!
Weather update – it’s cloudy in Brisbane today. Very bleak looking.
You’re totally missing out.
29 and sunny in Athens past two days. Almost as warm in Rome, where we’ll be soon…
Hi Guys.
Gina and I are in an internet cafe in Alona Beach, on Panglao Island, off beautiful Bohol in the Philippines checking my mail and your blog. Your gorgeous pictures of Santorina don’t make us too jealous ha ha because it is fabulous here. My only regret is not going to Santorini 30 years ago (my god) when I was last in Greece. Having a great time here but have a head cold which is preventing me from diving at the moment. Going to see the famous chocolate hills and the tarsine, which is a tiny monkey with huge eyes (very cute) that is only native to Bohol. Still hope to get a couple of dives in before we head back to Manila on Friday then Oz next Monday. (drat). Will email you soon. Love Dad and Gina
Hello hello, hope that you guys aren’t living it up too much! Have some pity for me, almost finished week 10, with a few big assignments left before 4 exams.. Just wondering Leah if you have found me a present yet? =) Because I would consider going to Melbourne or Sydney for a shopping trip later in the year if you are having difficulty finding me something..
Envying you xxxx
Hi Dad, glad you’re enjoying your break in the Phillipines. Santorini was so beautiful, but I can see it being a bit of a rat race when peak season begins. Shame about the diving, hopefully you get some good chances before you leave. In Florence now, had a bit of a frustrating day, but we’re here and tomorrow is a new one!
Hey there, poor thing, I don’t miss that part of uni at all! Haven’t found you a suitable 21st present yet, I’ll keep looking, but if I don’t have any luck I’ll definately take you down to Sydney or Melbourne (your choice) after I get back. I’m hoping to get some shopping in here in Florence, didn’t have time while we were in Rome! Good luck on the exams and assignments!
